Police K-9s: New Training When It Comes to Marijuana

For decades, K-9 dog units have been trained to recognize and respond to the scent of Marijuana. However, the recent global trends towards the legalization of marijuana is set to change this. In some states in the US, marijuana is already legal. Meanwhile, in Canada, marijuana is set to be fully legalized for recreational as well as medical use sometime this year.

As a result of these recent trends, several states in the US no longer train their new police dogs to recognize and search for the scent of marijuana. These include the states of Nevada and Oregon where marijuana is now legal. While the dogs will still be trained to recognize other illegal substances, marijuana has been given the clear.

Thanks to new laws legalizing marijuana in various states, some new police dogs are no longer being trained to search for the scent of marijuana.
